Forget that the Senate may block Burris and Franken from claiming their seats today, the real story is that Pelosi may not be reelected as Speaker of the House. According to Fox News, a number of conservative Democrats and Republicans are considering a vote of protest to elect John Dingell, a Democrat from Michigan.
Dingell, who represents most of Detroit’s western suburbs, is a liberal on a lot of issues with the exception of gun control. He also seems to be bought and paid for by the UAW and Little Three automakers. His wife Debbie is a senior executive at General Motors.
I guess the only good thing about Dingell is that he’s not as liberal as Nancy Pelosi. The other upside is that we don’t have to see her leathery old face and crooked finger more often if she’s ousted from power. Besides, what is she going to do when she doesn’t have her favorite boogyman, President Bush, in office anymore?
While Pelosi will probably remain speaker and Dingell doesn’t seem like a better alternative, it’s going to be funny to see an attempted coup among house Democrats. I can’t blame house Republicans going against minority leader John Boehner given his weak leadership and two consecutive losses for the GOP.
Maybe we’ll see a return of the Conservative Coalition between Blue Dog Democrats and conservative house Republicans.
